Justin Smoak. I see 101 waiting till middle of the 1st to select CC. Would you rather CC/T.Beckham/Holland or Smoak/T.Beckham/CC? Unless WTNY decides to leave Arod off the roster and solidfy that iffy pitching staff, the smart move here is to let CC slide. Who knows maybe he’s available at #9. After all, starting in 2010 CC’s salary climbs to robust 24M/year. Ouch!
I think he should go with Hosmer if he is going to pass on CC. Although, until now, I never thought he would take anyone but CC with the 1st pick. WTNY brings up a good point though, it might make sense to hold off until the 5th or 6th pick.
I think there’s a 5% chance he doesn’t take him, simply because at least one other team, and probably more, will have the dough to take on CC. If 101 was the only team with the cap space, I could see it.
As for salary, Arod was 27M last year and you won with him, it’s all about roster manipulation, and if a team can afford 24M on a pitcher and still put out a good team, I don’t see a problem with it.
Arod was 27M but contributing to 7 of 7 offensive categories. CC, being a SP, can only contribute to a max of 5 of 7 pitching categories. Let’s not forget pitchers are more likely to get injured than position players as well.
I’m still not sure the number of categories is relevant in this discussion. It gets back to how teams construct their roster. I happened to win in 06 with a closer making 11M. You won last year without any closer. Plenty of ways to skin a cat, or win SOT. But yes, CC at 16M is good value. CC at 24M is less valuable.
As for Arod, make the room Si7, I won’t be taking him early, so feel free to go for it!
Personally, I don’t like spending that much on a SP. King and Grienke seem locked in, Carmona and Bedard are question marks for sure. If you put CC in the front of that, 101 could go from the butt of every DMB standings joke to a contender in ’09. On the other hand, this league seems to be won with offense and 101 has some definate holes in the lineup so 16m spread around could do some damage. I think if 101 has his sites on winning in ’09, Burrel could be the pick with the the 2nd DH coming into play. If patience prevails, Smoak or Beckham could get the call. If his job was on the line, CC would be the pick. Many questions which should make for an exciting draft.
The number of categories is completely relevant. Any team can win with numerous combinations, but that doesn’t change the fact that a SP making 24M is a terrible decision for any gm to make in SOT. I hope he takes him, it makes his pitching staff considerably better than the rest. And as USA pointed out, points with the bat are going to be tough to come by for 101.
And you, DMB, spent 27M on a 3B last year (CC is looking at ~16M this year, which you seem to be ignoring in your argument). I don’t think anyone can argue that spending 27M on one player, or 24M on another is cost productive move. For as good as Arod was last year, his actual SOT production was probably equaled or surpassed by a couple players. If you’re spending 27M on someone, that shouldn’t happen, and the same can be said if you’re spending 24M on a pitcher. The overall point is, each team is constructed differently, with some choosing a balance of youth (cheap) and veterans (expensive), some choosing all mid-level types. At the end of the day, the number of categories is irrelevant, if the rest of your team can support it. Mo Rivera made 11M, pitched limited innings, and contributed mostly just to saves. Yet I was able to win with him in 06. According to you, that was a “terrible decision”.
Sorry guys. No internet connection for a couple of days. Fortunately with having the first pick of the draft ( or unfortunately looking at 2008) I dont have to pull any punches or play any mind games I cant just tell you what I’m thinking. CC is now 100% as of yesterday going #1 overall. The only hiccup to that plan would have been if Dunn signed in the AL and signed for 10m or less. Mike’s idea is all well and good if I didnt think AG or Chris would snatch him right up with the 2nd,3rd or 4th pick. CC at 15m is a no brainer as a top 3 pick. I cant imagine any scenario where he gets to me at 5. Also, the fact that all of my offensive positions outside of 3rd base are filled I dont really have anywhere else to spread that 15 mill around to other offensive positions like Tillman suggested.
With CC in hand I feel like I will have a top 3 staff at worst.

With pitchers like King,Grienke,Bedard,Carmona it’s very possible he lets CC fall.

I would rather Smoak/TBeck/CC.

Does WTNY get CC and Laporta?
Leave A-Rod out there, I’ll make cap space and take him

If CC doesn’t go #1 he will go #2.
Looks like AG just forced PQ’s hand.
Correction from post #4. I meant to say DMB instead of WTNY.

Conspicuous by his absence in this discussion…101.

$14-$15m, depending on how they count the bonus, is a great salary number this year for CC.

Ok, it’s settled. CC is going #1. Next up, AG, which means we should probably skip over it because he’s not giving up any info.
