2011 WM Proposal #8 Players Lost to NL Compensation
To follow along with MLB:
No draft pick compensation will be allowed to any SOT team for a player lost to NL via FA or Traded to NL unless the player was
1. On your keeper List entering the season
2. Drafted onto your 24 (20 farm) roster.
This would eliminate teams from picking up players who may qualify late in the year just to get a draft pick the following year.
This would take effect in 2013.
Thoughts/Comments/Concerns?
I don’t see the point here. Whats the problem with the current rule?
For example,
A lot of good MLB teams would trade for a player mid-year who could get them a FA comp pick for the following season, if that player was Type A or B.
In sot, a team in last place could pick up say CC Sabathia in Sept knowing he’d have the potential to sigin in the NL the following season. Under our current rules, the SOT owner would receive a compensation if CC (any player) signed in the NL.
This rule would prevent that. All players on your roster at the end of draft day would still qualify for the compensation pick.

I’m indifferent on this, I think we have to be careful following MLB to he letter though.

What about when you lose a stud prospect for CC, then CC returns to the NL. I can’t control where CC signs and I just loss my stud prospect. Shouldn’t I get compensation for CC? It’s not an SOT owners fault that an MLB team traded for CC, I thought we put in compensation to protect SOT owners from the things we can’t control.
I’m not totally against free agent pickup in SOT being ineligible for comp though, maybe have a cut off date instead of the whole year?
We can always make it so in this case the rule wouldn’t take place. You lose a player that you drafted so maybe the comp should be for the “stud prospect” lost, and not for say CC type player?
I agree with Rich. I think if a SOT team loses a prospect/playervia a trade and the player received in return for that prospect/player is a free agent to be and that player then signs in the NL following the season, I believe that SOT team should be compensated. I’m fine with the part that states FA pick ups during the season would not require compensation and would be cool with a cutoff time if that was a deal break for others.
After re-reading the proposal again. I think I’m fine with this. As it states if that prospect dealt was on your keeper list the SOT team would be protected.
